So this article is not going to pretend Collibra does nothing well. It does a specific job well. The question is whether that job is the one you actually need done, because there is a structural limit built into every catalogue, however good, and it is worth understanding before you commit to a six or seven figure programme.

The passive catalogue problem

Here is the limit. Collibra is a metadata layer. It describes your data. It does not sit between your data and the people consuming it.

That single architectural fact has three consequences.

First, policies in a catalogue are advisory. You can write in Collibra that the customer_email column is classified as PII and must only be accessed by approved roles. That policy is a statement of intent. Nothing in the catalogue stops an analyst with a broad warehouse role from selecting that column at nine on a Tuesday morning. Enforcement happens, if it happens at all, somewhere else: in warehouse grants, in a policy engine, in masking rules configured by hand, in a separate access management tool. The catalogue documents the rule. Other systems, maintained by other teams, are supposed to make it true.

Can they work together?

Yes, and in some organisations they genuinely should.

If you already run a large Collibra programme, it is probably doing organisational work that Integrius does not try to do: the enterprise-wide glossary spanning systems that will never be data products, the certification workflows, the regulatory documentation across the whole estate, the operating model for hundreds of stewards. Ripping that out to make a point about architecture would be a mistake.
