What MuleSoft does well
MuleSoft, now owned by Salesforce, is the most established name in enterprise API integration. Its Anypoint Platform gives large organisations a way to design, build, manage, and monitor APIs at scale, and to connect applications to each other through a layered, API-led architecture.
Credit where it is due, because there is plenty.
MuleSoft's API management is genuinely mature. Rate limiting, API gateways, developer portals, policy enforcement, versioning, analytics: if your organisation runs hundreds of internal and external APIs, Anypoint gives you a coherent way to manage all of them. Few products in the market match that depth.
The connector ecosystem is broad and battle-tested. Years of enterprise deployments mean that the awkward edge cases of connecting to SAP, mainframes, and legacy ERP systems have mostly been found and handled.
The partner network is enormous. Whatever your industry, there is a systems integrator who has delivered MuleSoft in it before. For organisations that buy implementation capacity rather than build it, that matters.
And the API-led connectivity model itself, where experience APIs sit on process APIs which sit on system APIs, is a sound architectural pattern for application integration. When the job is "make application A talk to application B, reliably, at enterprise scale, with proper API management in front of it," MuleSoft is a credible default choice.
This article is not going to pretend otherwise. The interesting question is not whether MuleSoft is good. It is whether the problem you actually have is the problem MuleSoft was built to solve.
Where MuleSoft falls short
MuleSoft is an application integration platform. It connects systems. What it does not do, because it was never designed to, is govern data as a product.
That distinction sounds subtle. In practice it is the whole game.
When you build an integration in MuleSoft, you produce an API that moves data between systems. What you do not automatically get is an accountable owner for the data itself, a canonical schema everyone has agreed on, field-level access control on what each consumer sees, an approval workflow for new access, or a tamper-evident audit trail of who read what. Those concerns sit outside the integration layer. Most MuleSoft estates handle them with process, documentation, and hope.
There are other practical costs worth naming honestly.
Implementation time is measured in months. MuleSoft projects typically need specialist developers who know Anypoint, DataWeave, and the API-led methodology. Finding and paying those people is its own programme of work, and the hidden cost of data integration compounds quietly while the platform is being stood up.
Cost is famously high. MuleSoft does not publish list pricing, but publicly reported deals commonly reach six or seven figures annually once licences, cores, and implementation services are added together. For many organisations that is a justifiable spend on application integration. For organisations that mostly need governed data access, it is a lot of money for the wrong tool.
And there is ecosystem gravity. MuleSoft is a Salesforce company, and the platform sits most naturally inside a Salesforce-centred strategy. That is fine if Salesforce is your centre of gravity. It is a constraint if it is not.
Finally, an architectural point. Every integration you build in an ESB-style platform is still a point-to-point connection at heart, however well layered. As sources and consumers multiply, the N x M data integration problem reasserts itself: more pipes, more maintenance, more places for governance to leak.
What Integrius does differently

Two more things matter for the comparison with MuleSoft.
First, deployment. Integrius is entirely self-hosted. It runs inside your infrastructure, supports air-gapped operation, has zero SaaS dependencies, and never phones home. For regulated and security-sensitive organisations, self-hosted data governance is not a preference, it is a requirement, and it is one a cloud-anchored platform cannot meet.
Second, time to value. Because the platform's job is narrower and sharper than a general integration suite, the first governed data product is typically live in days, not months. There is no six-month foundation phase before anything useful ships.

Architecture comparison: ESB vs governed data layer
The cleanest way to see the difference is to compare what each platform puts at the centre.
MuleSoft puts the API at the centre. Its architecture is about exposing systems as APIs, composing those APIs into processes, and managing the resulting API estate. Data flows through, but the platform's contract is with the API, not with the data.
Integrius puts the data product at the centre. Its architecture is about defining what a business concept means, who owns it, who may see which parts of it, and serving that definition through a stable endpoint. The API exists, but it is the delivery mechanism for a governed product, not the product itself.

One Integrius feature deserves a sentence on its own, because it answers the question every integration team dreads. The dependency graph shows what is built on what, and blast radius analysis shows exactly which downstream products and consumers break before you change anything. In an ESB estate, that knowledge usually lives in a wiki page that was accurate two reorganisations ago.
Pricing comparison
MuleSoft does not publish list pricing. What can be said responsibly: pricing is typically built around platform licences and processing capacity, implementation requires significant services spend, and publicly reported enterprise deals commonly reach six or seven figures annually. Budgeting is a negotiation, and the services line often rivals the licence line.
Integrius publishes its pricing, and the model is deliberately simple: you pay per governed data product in production. Not per seat, per connector, per row, or per CPU. Pilot is EUR 5,000 per month for up to 20 data products with Optic lite included. Enterprise is EUR 18,000 per month for up to 50. Platform Lite is EUR 22,000 per month for up to 75. Platform is EUR 320,000 per year for 100 or more, with Search and Optic, the AI analytics layer, included.
The shapes reward different behaviour. Capacity-based pricing means cost grows with infrastructure footprint whether or not it delivers value. Per-product pricing means cost grows only when you put another governed product into production, which is the moment value is actually created.
When to choose MuleSoft
Be honest with yourself about the job, and MuleSoft remains the right answer in clear cases.
Choose MuleSoft when your core problem is application integration: many enterprise applications that need to exchange transactions and events reliably, with mature API management in front of them. Choose it when you need a full API lifecycle platform, with developer portals, monetisation, and policy enforcement across hundreds of APIs. Choose it when you are deeply invested in the Salesforce ecosystem and want the integration layer that Salesforce itself backs. And choose it when you have, or are happy to buy, the specialist delivery capacity that an Anypoint programme needs, because with the right team it delivers what it promises.
None of that is faint praise. For enterprise application integration at scale, MuleSoft has earned its position.
When to choose Integrius
Choose Integrius when the problem is data, not application plumbing. When different teams answer the same business question with different numbers because there is no canonical definition. When auditors ask who accessed which field and the honest answer is a shrug. When access to sensitive data is granted by ticket and remembered by nobody. When you need data product governance that is enforced at the point of access, not documented in a policy PDF.
Choose it when sovereignty matters: when the platform must run inside your infrastructure, possibly air-gapped, with no data and no telemetry leaving the building.
Choose it when you cannot wait two quarters. A governed data product live in days changes the political economy of the project: stakeholders see value before scepticism sets in.
And choose it when the budget conversation needs a predictable number. Per-product pricing is legible to a CFO in a way that capacity-plus-services pricing never is.

Migration path from MuleSoft
Nobody should rip out a working MuleSoft estate on the strength of a blog post, and we will not suggest it. The realistic path is incremental, and Integrius is built for it.
Start by leaving application integration where it is. The transactional flows MuleSoft handles, order routing, event propagation, system-to-system synchronisation, keep doing their job.
Then take one painful data access problem, the customer view nobody trusts, the regulatory report assembled by hand, and build it as a governed data product in Integrius. Connect directly to the underlying sources with the built-in connectors, or treat existing MuleSoft APIs as REST sources, which works without touching the MuleSoft estate at all. Ship it in days, with an owner, access control, and an audit chain from day one.
